What is a prayer war room?

A prayer war room is a place you set apart to meet with God: a quiet corner, a closet, a parked car, or a kitchen table before anyone wakes up. It is where you bring what you are carrying, and pray it through until God answers.

Where the idea comes from

Jesus taught His disciples to pray in a closed, quiet place, away from an audience:

“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

Matthew 6:6, KJV

The “closet” was the inner room of a house, often the storeroom, the one room with a door. The point is not the room. It is shutting out distraction and speaking honestly with your Father.

Why call it a war room? Scripture says our struggle is spiritual: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers” (Ephesians 6:12, KJV). A war room is where a battle is planned. In prayer, it is where you bring each battle to God. Many people first heard the phrase from the 2015 film War Room. Prayer War Room, the app, is not connected with the film.

How to set up a prayer war room at home

  1. Choose a place. Any spot where you can be quiet for ten minutes. It does not need to be a closet.
  2. Keep a Bible and a notebook there, so you are not looking for them when it is time to pray.
  3. Write down what you are praying about. Some people tape requests and verses to the wall. Group them: burdens to surrender, decisions you need wisdom for, and promises you are holding onto.
  4. Pick a time. “My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD” (Psalm 5:3). A set time turns prayer into a habit.
  5. Write down the answers. When God answers, yes, wait or no, note how. Looking back at answered prayer builds faith for the next battle.

What to pray about in your war room

A simple shape keeps your mind from wandering. Start with confession (“Search me, O God”), praise God for who He is, read a short passage of Scripture and be still, bring your requests and the people you carry, and end with thanks. Our guide How to pray: a simple way to start walks through each step.

A prayer war room in your pocket

Not everyone has a quiet room. Almost everyone carries a phone. Prayer War Room is a free app that keeps your war room with you:

The Prayer War Room app’s Home screen: “Welcome to your War Room”, an arched door with a fire, a 7-day streak and the Enter War Room button
Home: your altar fire and the door into your prayer time.

You don’t have to pray alone

A war room is private, but the battles in it are often shared. Read how to pray for each other, or, if you lead a group, see the app for Bible study groups and small groups.
